I knew I did want to keep going with the Classics Challenge but I've been hesitant to put up a list. I just spent the latter part of last year really struggling to read. But I've turned a corner! I really do feel like my reading mojo is back. I've read 7 books this year already and for the most part those were good books. Even the ones I disagreed with still challenged me to think through why I disagreed and push back and I've been discussing them with friends and Craig. So I feel like I'm ready to commit to an actual list (although I do reserve the right to change my mind!)
19th Century - No committment yet. Probably my easiest category to fill but too many options right now.
20th Century Classic - The Chosen. I won't change on this one because I picked it up last week and am already 75% of the way through!
Classic by a Woman - Something by Ngaio Marsh. I did a lot of mysteries last year as my comfort read and I'm not forcing myself to stop that but I will at least ask myself to branch out. I haven never read anything by Ngaio Marsh! Which is incredible to me because I love the golden age of detective novels. I might move this to New-to-You Author spot though.
Classic in Translation - A Russian. Probably One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich but truthfully, its been on my tbr list for a few years now and I can't seem to make myself get to it. But I don't think I have War and Peace or the Brothers Karamozov in me right now.
Classic by a BIPOC - One Hundred Years of Solitude is another one that's been on my to-be-read list for a while now.
Classic by a New-to-You Author. I really want to read something by Booth Tarkinton but never have. Maybe The Magnificent Ambersons or Alice Adams.
Classic by a Favorite Author - Karen recently reminded me I still have a number of Wilkie Collin's books to read. I've loved all I've read of his so far so need to keep going! I also really love Elizabeth Gaskell but have never read Mary Barton or Ruth so those are options.
Classic About an Animal - Oh goodness, I can't think of anything right now. Ideas welcome!
Children's Classic - This is almost a cheat category for me :- ) Jonah and I are reading Robin Hood right now and we'll start The Princess and the Goblin next terms so I'll probably pick one of those although I haven't ever read The Little Prince and its a "children's" classic I don't really want to read outloud to my kids so maybe I'll put it here so I finally get around to it.
Classic Humor or Satire - I'm thinking maybe one of the sequels to The Scarlet Pimpernel. I enjoyed the first one.
Travel or Adventure Classic - Another one I don't have any ideas for yet!
Classic Play - Lucy and I will start our next Shakespeare play as soon as we finish her current Plutarch story so I could do that or I might be brave and try a plan on my own. But which one? Other than Shakespeare, I don't think I've ever read a play I enjoyed (I took an honors drama class in college so I actually read quite a few of the ones I see on lists of the classics but didn't really enjoy them. I'm not sure if that's because the class sucked the joy out or because I'm just not a play person.)
So there is my not at all permanent list of ideas to get my started. Hopefully I'll be back soon with a review or two!
