Kentucky Fried Mishap

We were in Louisville last week during our Christmas travels, and we met up with an old friend of mine and her husband. As we were parting ways, they mentioned that Colonel Sanders, of KFC fame, was buried in a nearby cemetery. As a history and cemetery buff, I had to check it out.

We arrived at the cemetery with only 5 minutes before closing time. We got directions to the grave in question from the guard, and hurriedly set out for it. We were unclear on where exactly to go, but after turning around once, we found Marshall Andrew Sanders.


I couldn't recall the Colonel's name, but I thought "Hey, it's Colonel Sanders, this must be him." After we snapped this photo, we left the cemetery and headed back to MacKenzie's parents' house. I went to Wikipedia to ensure that we got the right guy, and I realized two things that I already knew:

• The Colonel's first name was Harland, and
• He wasn't a real colonel (more on the Kentucky Colonels here).
  

This is what I was looking for:


Much more fitting for a man of his stature. I was disappointed that we didn't find it, and I knew we wouldn't be back in Louisville to try again on this trip, or anytime in the foreseeable future. I should have paid closer attention to that guard's directions. I always do that.

But then, all of a sudden, I woke up with a start, in a cold sweat. I had found his grave after all, and the proof was right there on my camera:


Relieved, I happily went back to sleep with visions of chicken legs dancing in my head.
