W(d)WFMW - Crockpot oatmeal

Today's Works For Me Wednesday is different, it is really a What DOESN'T Work For Me Wednesday - I know, it's crazy!

So what doesn't work for me - oatmeal in a crockpot. I tried it last week and it was not good! I used 1 cup of oatmeal and 2 cups of water and all I got was a oatmeal crust around my crockpot with some oat-y water in the middle. Definitely not edible. I am pretty sure that my oats:water ratio was correct, perhaps I just didn't make a big enough batch? Since other people seem to get this to work, I figured that must be it, although that much oatmeal was already going to be more than the two of us could eat so I don't think a bigger batch is an option for us right now.

But I really want a way to make healthy (aka non-instant) oatmeal for us during the week so I am not giving up hope yet. I have heard of using a rice cooker and our rice cooker is quite small (holds ~4 cups) so that might be an option...has anyone done that before? I have also heard of soaking the oats overnight, more for health reasons than convenience, but the result is a faster cooking time in the morning. That might something else I try. Anyone out there have any suggestions?

    I'd love to know how it turns out in the rice cooker!

  3. Make granola and mix it with yogurt. Or else use a really big pot to make otameal on the stove.

  5. i've never made it in my crockpot although i always say i'm gonna....but how about this: make a big batch on the stove, put it into smaller containers and refrigerate. in the morning, reheat and serve. i used to do this and it worked great, i'd take the container with me, heat in the microwave at work and eat...my recipe had raisins and stuff cooked in so i didn't even need to add anything...

  6. I've made oatmeal in the crockpot once and it turned out great. I know I had to adjust the cooking time because my slow cooker always cooks hotter than the average, could that have been a problem?

    We soak our oats overnight and they are very simple and fast to make in the morning.

  7. use steel cut oats....they are great in the crock-pot w/apples, raisins, cinnamon, brown sugar (or honey) and a sprinkling of nuts...yum

  8. Go to the Food Network website and search for crock pot oatmeal. There are some great recipes that we love there. I think someone else mentioned steel cut oats...they work a whole lot better than rolled oats.

  9. You need to use the pin head/steel cut oats, and a smaller crockpot. I bought a small crockpot just for oatmeal because the big one was just too big.
